A power supply unit (or PSU) converts mains AC to low-voltage regulated DC power for the internal components of a computer. Modern personal computers universally use switched-mode power supplies. Some power supplies have a manual switch for selecting input voltage, while others automatically adapt to the mains voltage. Switched Mode Power Supplies, (often abbreviated to SMPS) are considerably more complex than the linear regulated power supplies. The main advantage of this added complexity is that switched-mode operation gives regulated DC supplies that can deliver more power for a given size, cost and weight of power unit.
